Meet Mattt - Cool bags

These cool dudes from Melbourne, Australia showed their wares at the recent Melbourne Design Market 2009. Happily, I saw their bags at Wild Jam on Pin Oak Crescent (the window of this little boutique is a source of inspiration).

They do their own fabric. And their website is interactive so you can pick the fabric for the design of bag you like!

winter wonderland

it's cold cold cold and i know i'll miss the ski season again this year thanks to exams (thank you exams...not!)

look at this absolutely stunning ski lodge Fjall in Falls Creek - state of the art design and interiors.  how i adore the Scandinavian styling - crisp, white lines, wooden detailing and the antlers!  how wonderful.  oh and there are those great Eames chairs I so love too.

not only will i not be able to go, i could not afford...but i can dream can't i? that's for free!

Baby mittens - no, I'm not clucky yet!

Friends everywhere are preggers.

I decided to make baby mittens as a gift to these friends. Mittens are useful.

Or... not? Issues with mittens as a gift:

1. there's only a small window when these mittens are useful and appropriate - the period of a baby's life when they don't need their thumbs.

2. I don't know who to give them to first. I have one pair at this stage (still learning). There's two girls from my church who are pregnant. An ex-colleague from work. A few friends in Perth.

But (a) might answer the issue. I need to give baby mittens to the 'mum to be' while she's a 'mum to be'... I'm thinking the late stages of the pregnancy/almost about to give birth is appropriate. who's first?!

i need more mittens to give away. Or, maybe baby mittens aren't that useful after all.

But they sure are cute.

Chalkboard Mug

Look at the cool mug Su gave me for my birthday! Unfortunately, in my excitement of trying to open the box it came in, I made the two chalksticks explode out and in slow motion, I got to watch as they hurled to the ground and break...that's gotta be a record time for breaking a present. Still, awesome present Su. love it x

Felt - a tribute to Germ

Got crafty on the weekend.  Inspired by:

1.  an cute scarf in a shop on Brunswick Street when I went shopping with Germ 2 weekends ago.  No picture but you know the one - a 100% pashmina or wool or cotton thing in an amazing colour with FELT detailing.

2.  birds in general. Drew this:
3.  Germ giving me fabric she got for free when She went shopping. the fabric is probably great for a sock or some kinda jumper (!) but kinda useful as a scarf too.

Can't wait to do more felt detailing...

stuff white people like

you may have heard of this guy and his blog - it's about what 'white people' like.  well, he has popped up in our sphere after a visit to Melbourne.  my husband was amused to read in an age article that this guy is trying to find "Melbourne's Whitest Spot" in the following places:
Lander finishes his poached eggs and orders another coffee. Although he and his wife arrived just two days ago, they have already seen several contenders for Melbourne's Whitest Spot, including Degraves Street in the city, the Readings end of Lygon Street and Shanghai Dumpling House in Chinatown.
Visitors or residents of Melbourne would have heard or know that 'Shanghai Dumpling House' is a place that has seriously cheap chinese fare that is beloved by 'white people' despite a few health and cleanliness issues (!)

the winner?  North Fitzroy. One of my (work) partners lives there.  That's interesting.

i think this guy is totally controversial.  but i can't deny reading entry #56 and thinking - that's the world i live in.  find out what you have in common with this guy's version of 'white people' at http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/.

Green & Pink Wedding

Here is a wedding that Kay and I helped do the decorations for. The couple wanted a very small intimate ceremony that felt casual and comfortable. It was a low budget as the couple was having a big ceremony overseas with relative. Their theme was green and pink. So we came up with table centerpieces that doubled as wedding favours. We tied pink ribbon across apples stacked up in steam bamboo baskets - surrounded by tea candles and mirrors.

We also had willow branches tied with pink and green bows across the hall with larger candles with more pink cord.

p.s. The first two photos were taken by Deenie's husband - such a talented couple!

Plugged Candle

Check Out this awesome idea. These are actual candles that have plug shapes at the end so they can fit into any electrical outlet. It comes with these glass "power board" holders but it won't be available till mid-summer (US Time i assume). Available at Design Glut. These would make interesting table centrepieces for a science/school themed event.

Elk Accessories

I saw this brooch in the window of the local designer accessory store next to Pepper Cafe. Elk Accessories have cool products. It's new from their range. Ah, oak tree brooches are so sophisticated!
